Viruses - A virus is a small piece of software that piggybacks on real programs. For example, a virus might attach itself to a file such as a Word document. Each time the Word document is opened, the virus runs, too, and it has the chance to reproduce (by attaching to other programs like Windows) or wreak havoc. An e-mail virus moves around in e-mail messages, and usually replicates itself by automatically mailing itself to dozens of people in the victim's e-mail address book. There are also others known as Trojans and Worms. Spyware/Adware – Spyware is a category of computer programs that attach themselves to Windows, usually without your consent. They can suck the life out of your computer's processing power. They are designed to track your Internet habits, bombard you with unwanted sales offers or generate traffic for their host Web site. The are known to reproduce and compete with each other for your computers resources. They can cause a relatively new computer to take several minutes just to open one web page. |
